In the film a Trip to the Moon, it was one of the first films to use special effects. This film really caught my eye when we watched it in class because of how advanced it was for the time. I was shocked that they were able to create some of these shots and the use of special effects. Melies was using crazy stories, optical illusions, and many other tricks to come up with action packed films that grabbed the viewers attention. This film also showed me how much we have advanced in the film industry.
We then go into movies like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which builds off of Melies work and goes even further. This film also had a crazy story using optical illusions and filled with action. Reading this chapter I learned that film was not always located in California. Originally it was mostly located in New York. Most of the films from the early 1900's were produced in New York. I also learned that in the time from 1900's to 1910's you had to pay Edison if you wanted to make a film. Edison owned the patent for moving pictures at the time, so you had to go through him. This chapter really highlighted to me how far we have come in the industry and how much more we are yet to achieve.
